New toys, new events and some great courses to boot! Over the the next 3 or 4 days the site will be updated and everything should become clear.. Egypt post-revolution has it would seem been less than inviting to the windsurfing populous…

Perhaps the idea of dodging the perceived bullets, avoiding the riots, the road blocks and the revolutionaries is too much..  Alliterations aside Moonbeach has seen none of the aforementioned action and has been a positive sanctuary for many local residents and expats during the upheaval that seems come with political change in the Middle East. Whilst those of you who have visited from the UK, Bahrain, Europe and even further afield can also testify that the windsurfing has been as epic as ever, the dolphins have been in abundance and generally the season has gone swimmingly.

But on the whole, the consensus has been less positive and it’s for this reason, along with a couple more minor hiccups that we’re closing our doors on the 2011 season on 26th September. After the year that’s been we feel we need the time to consolidate our position, and plan for a post-election, democratic Egypt.

So.. if you’re after a last minute escape there is still time to join us, and with flight prices falling post-Ramadan and the end of the school holidays approaching there’s really no better time to join us. August and September can offer some of the best conditions we get all year. Strong, reliable wind, water as warm as a bath and uncrowded, straight off the beach windsurfing, what more could you want?

If you can’t make it, and we know it’s short notice, then don’t worry. 2012 has all the signs of being an epic year, and Moonbeach Windsurfing will be back. Not necessarily bigger, but almost certainly better.. with the same great location, stunning conditions, playful dolphins and the perfect unspoilt windsurfing playground.

2nd only to the Suez Canal – tourism is what keeps this part of the world ticking over.. and yup, this is slightly bias – but when all around you innocent folk from the local petrol station to Mohammed at the fruit and veg shop in Ras Sudr are struggling to get by, and even the local off-license has gone out of business.. you begin to wonder when it will end…

As for the guilty pleasure bit.. after the first 8 days of this month have brought us Force 6+ everyday we’ve got ourselves a slight dilemma.. just like everyone else in Egypt we need the custom…. but when there is a massive stretch of water, endless wind and temperatures that are sitting mid 30’s.. With a few guests and only 5 under-utilized folk (staff!!) using it – they’re going to really struggle to share the space and their toys again…!

Save us the decision.. take them out of their comfort-zone and join us for some epic conditions, a few beers and a week or two in possibly the most relaxing windsurfing location you’ll find post-revolution anywhere in the world…

In the meantime we’re already setting our sights on September.. Phil and Danielle of GetWindsurfing are planning another course with us. After the success of their March group they’re taking full advantage of our perfect coaching location to offer another of their increasingly popular intensive coaching clinics… From the 11th to 18th of September they’re going to be offering their own brand of windsurfing clinic.. loads of learning, a ton of play, and of course all the aprés surf you can handle.. So, whether you’re intermediate or advanced, doing battle alone, or traveling en mass why not take advantage of some superior coaching, an epic location and of course a shed full of the finest windsurfing toys…

What an epic afternoon.. truly amazing.. not something that anyone would expect to hear coming out of my mouth when the wind is non-existent.. but just for today it’s completely true..

…and the reason.. dolphins – loads of them.. ever so occasionally we get an afternoon when both us and them have very little to do but enjoy life and a swim – sharing our bay, it’s not often a millpond…

They’d already been around this morning, but heading south and with it being the weekend it was kind of busy.. a flotilla of kayaks, paddle boards, dinghies and the odd hotel pedal-ow could be seen heading down the coast in hot pursuit… about an hour later we had some very tired people trying to get back to the beach… 5 or 6kms along the coast is a fair old way when you’re not used to paddling…

But this afternoon.. Greg, James, Bronwen, Peter and myself enjoyed a fanatstic hour or so, swimming, and just generally taking in the true awesomeness of these creatures… we are very lucky…

In the process Greg managed to get some amazing footage which I will endeavour to cut and put online in the next couple of days… along with a few stills I managed to grab, which hopefully will show just how close we all were…

With the wind due back the day after tomorrow there is even time to get it done.. but strangely right now.. I’m not sure I’d rather be swimming… unbelievable.

We started our 2011 season with a GetWindsurfing clinic courtesy of Phil Richards and Danielle Lucas. A great week was had by all, with our guests/their students Andy, Les and Doug experiencing a variety of conditions, and with all areas of tuition being covered from beach and waterstarting to spocks and looping, everyone was well catered for. We were even lucky enough to have a onshore day which always brings a rare and barely witnessed angle to Moonbeach and it’s windsurfing.

Alongside our regular guests we have also had the pleasure of Adam Sims, Max Rowe, Steve Thorne and Josh Willmot tearing up the water. All of them first time visitors to MB; they journeyed up here to discover for themselves what our part of the world has to offer. They’re in the process of putting together a video of their spring-tour of Sinai – and we were first stop on their mini road trip. Round Sinai road trip

Road-trips seem all the rage right now, and here’s one anyone can join in. GetWindsurfing are organizing a road trip round Sinai, taking in us here at MB, El Tur, Dahab for the recently announced Festival and finishing off at the little known Ras Abu Gallum lagoon, with a nice spot of tenting.. it all sounds good to us, and if we didn’t have to work we’d be giving that one a go for sure.. I know everyone is talking about it, but it really is the time to get out here and enjoy uncrowded water and some of the best sailing conditions you’ll find anywhere..

As for March.. it’s not over yet.. more soon…

.. well that was until one of our regular visitors from Cairo, a certain Damien DeBacker, (known to many in the UK as a regular participant on the UK wave tour – Masters Division) began experimenting with various USB leads, carbon masts and rusty baked bean tins… and thanks to his ingenuity, and tireless laboring with only cans of cold Sakara and the odd gin and tonic for support – and much ridicule for his endeavors, particularly from Dan.. we now finally have an almost constant 3G connection.. something of a revelation in these parts… fingers crossed it stays that way…

As with all progress, we are all embracing the upside. Be it better Skype® chat, Facebook® access or Dan being able to watch his cookery shows on YouTube®. In fact it might only be me that has any reservations.. the true downside of progress is my last excuse has now gone.. regular updates people… brace yourselves…

Here at Moonbeach, not so much has changed really… We’re lucky enough to be pretty much as far as you can get from all the craziness..  so whilst all around people protested to their hearts content, here at the beach, without BBC World and the internet, you might never have know the world was changing.

Aside from a downturn in basic services such as petrol and food, life at the beach has been ticking along quite nicely… Work for 2011 season has continued apace, with the last of the building work coming to a close, the additional club rack storage is almost finished and with all the kit for 2011 now on site, and the wind building everyone is waiting desperately for the season to begin.

For those of you who might understandably be a little concerned with the current state of affairs in Egypt, rest assured life is returning to normal rapidly. Egyptians on the whole are a friendly, welcoming bunch, and with tourism high on their list of their priorities they are keen to have us all back…

In summary, whilst they continue to advise against all essential travel to Cairo, both Sharm  El Sheikh and Cairo airports are both running a normal service, and onward travel from both these destinations is considered to be perfectly safe.
